Somatic Experiencing

Inviting the Body into Talk Therapy

Somatic Experiencing in San Francisco, California

We invite the body into talk therapy to increase awareness and mindfulness.

Repeated trauma and/or stressors can often impact the nervous system, taking it outside of its normal rhythm. This trauma builds up energy that is may remain stuck and has not been released. When this happens, the nervous system may have difficulty handling the ebbs and flows associated with daily life. Not functioning within its normal flow makes concentrating, managing emotions, handling stress, interacting with others, or remaining in the present moment difficult.

Your therapist will assist you in taking it slow to process what is coming up in sessions.

Slowing down is the key ingredient to helping you move through trauma without re-traumatizing yourself.

Somatic Experiencing aims to bring harmony back to your nervous system. This method slows you down as you revisit the trauma to explore your sensations in the present moment. We may pause during parts of the session to bring awareness to what is going on in your body, memory, senses, or sensations you are noticing.

Bringing mindfulness and flow back to your body can help you not only notice changes within your body but helps to reset your body’s natural flow within the nervous system along with releasing built-up energy caused by trauma.

Shae Ivie-Williams is a trained Somatic Therapist at the Intermediate Level.
