What Is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

Reprocessing trauma attached to negative beliefs

EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy used to relieve symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and many other mental health concerns. It uses rapid bilateral eye movements or bilateral tapping to help you process traumatic memories and adverse life experiences — rewiring your brain toward more adaptive beliefs and associations.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to retell your trauma in detail or complete homework between sessions.

How It Works

Both sides of your brain, working together

The bilateral movements in EMDR — whether eye movements or tapping — help integrate both hemispheres of your brain while you process difficult experiences. This enhances communication within your brain's networks, helping to desensitize painful memories and reprocess them into something you can hold without distress.

Shae Ivie-Williams is trained in EMDR and integrates it alongside IFS and Somatic Experiencing for deeper, more embodied healing.

What to Expect in Sessions
01

History & Preparation

Your therapist will take time to understand your history, identify target memories or beliefs, and build a foundation of safety and resourcing before any reprocessing begins.

02

Desensitization

Using bilateral stimulation — eye movements or tapping — you'll bring up a target memory while your therapist guides you through sets of movement. The memory gradually loses its emotional charge.

03

Installation & Integration

Positive, adaptive beliefs are installed in place of the painful ones. Your brain's networks are rewired — and you leave with the memory intact but no longer holding you back.
